How to Track Google Lens Traffic in Shopify Search Console

Search Console may show an aggregate Web multimodal segment that includes Google Lens, but it does not isolate Lens or attribute Shopify sales and sessions. Learn how to check the report and act on its data.

How to Track Google Lens Traffic in Shopify Search Console

To track Google Lens traffic for a Shopify store, check Performance > Search results in Google Search Console for the Web multimodal search type. If it is available, it may show an aggregate segment that includes Lens and other image-led searches, not Lens-only activity. Search Console reports search clicks and impressions; it does not attribute Shopify sessions, orders, or revenue to Lens.

How to track image-led traffic for a Shopify store

  1. Choose the right property. Select a verified Search Console property that covers your storefront’s canonical domain. A Domain property can cover the domain across protocols and subdomains; a URL-prefix property covers only URLs within its specific prefix. Check the canonical URL on your live Shopify storefront and confirm that its URLs match the selected property after redirects. If you have multiple properties, compare their URL patterns and use the one that includes the final storefront URLs you want to analyze.
  2. Open Performance > Search results.
  3. Open the Search type filter. If Web multimodal is listed, select it. Review the clicks and impressions metrics, then open the Pages tab to see the landing-page URLs associated with that search segment. Sort by clicks to find pages with the most recorded activity; also review impressions for pages that appeared often but received fewer clicks. You can filter for a product or collection URL when investigating a specific part of the store.
  4. If Web multimodal is not listed, review Web and Image search types separately for broader context. Neither should be relabeled as Lens traffic.
  5. Record the date range and export the report if you want to compare results in a spreadsheet. Keep each search type and property separate when comparing periods.

These figures describe Search Console search performance only. A click is not a confirmed Shopify session, and an impression is not a visit. The report cannot show whether a search click resulted in an order or how much revenue it produced. Landing-page rows are URLs associated with the selected search data, not a complete attribution path through the store.

Compare equivalent periods, such as one 28-day period with the preceding 28 days, using the same property and search type. Differences in period length, season, or search type can make comparisons misleading. Missing or very small values do not prove a page received no Lens visits: the report may not expose a separate Lens count, and low-volume activity may not appear as a useful row.

How to interpret multimodal data and missing rows

Use landing pages and their clicks and impressions to identify pages worth inspecting, not to claim that a specific image or change caused a result. If the multimodal filter is unavailable, Web and Image reports can still show broader performance trends, but they cannot identify which visits came from Lens.

Hypothetical example: Suppose a product page has 10 Web multimodal clicks in one 28-day period and 4 in the preceding 28 days. Check the same page and equivalent periods in Web and Image search reports, if available. A repeated pattern can make the page a reasonable candidate for an image and usability review. These illustrative numbers are not a benchmark and do not show that an image change caused the difference.

Prioritize pages with recurring patterns across comparable periods, especially when they matter to your business. If counts are small or a pattern appears only once, keep monitoring rather than making a broad change based on that signal alone.

Which Shopify product-image details should you audit first?

Start in Shopify admin at Products. Open a product, select an image in its Media section, and review or add its alt text in the media details. Keep the text concise and factual: describe what the image shows without repeating keywords or guessing a Lens query.

Then open the product’s live storefront page at its canonical URL and inspect the page as a customer would. Confirm that the main image loads, appears as an image rather than only as a decorative background, and has useful alt text. Check that nearby product copy describes the item shown and that the page is publicly accessible. Review the layout on a narrow screen as well as a desktop so images and product details remain easy to use.

These checks support image accessibility, page clarity, and crawlability. They do not guarantee more image-led search traffic.

How should you balance image discovery with page weight?

On the live product page, inspect prominent images’ pixel dimensions and file sizes, and compare them with the size at which they appear. Start with the main product image and other large images near the top of the page. In Shopify admin, review the product media you plan to replace or update; on the storefront, confirm that the revised image still loads clearly and fits the page.

Optimize assets that are much larger or heavier than their displayed size requires, while preserving sharp product details and useful alternate views. Recheck the storefront after changes, including on a narrow screen. Do not remove useful product imagery simply to reduce file size.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if Web multimodal is not in the Search type filter?

Use the Web and Image reports available in your property for broader performance context. Search Console cannot provide a separate multimodal breakdown through a filter that is absent from your account.

Can I see traffic for an individual Shopify product variant?

Search Console reports performance for the property and landing pages it records. Do not assume it provides Shopify variant-level reporting; check the landing-page rows available for your property.
